Wintertime Too

Summer time and the living’s not easy, rivers overflowing, temperatures high.

The rich are getting richer and the impoverished are dying; don’t turn away now- hear them cry.

One of these mornings we’ll rise up swinging; spread wings of resistance- take to the sky.

Until that morning there’s many things to do; don’t forget- wintertime too.

Summer time and the living ain’t easy, oil’s flowing into the sea.

The rich got blood on their hands and the poor folk know what’s coming.

Let’s make a stand for you and me. Don’t forget, wintertime too.

A sunny day at the 2012 NDG Arts Walk

The NDG Arts Walk is an annual event bringing live painting and performances into the streets of the Montreal borough of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.  The afternoon event is part of the NDG Arts Week which is a celebration of the rich variety of arts and culture in the neighborhood.  This year was the third and most successful yet with many artists and spectators in the hot sun accompanied by music from both Jay Stevens and Mark Pinkus.

Jay and Jim strut them threads!

Thumbing through an old magazine found in Shoestring’s eclectic bathroom library, I came across an interesting article with an even more intriguing portrait.  Personally intriguing to me for two reasons– I am very fond of the work of the artist involved and– “I got that same shirt!”  How fantastic that Jim Cuddy is posing in a very unique western-style shirt so similar to the shirt that I wore on the back cover of my second album “When the World Pulls the Plug”  [seen below]

Immediately I thought, “when did this shoot go down?”  Flip it to the front cover:  It’s the spring 2008 issue of strut, a cultural-mag out of Toronto.  The photo shoot for WTWPTP was in the summer of 2007 in beautiful High Park in Toronto.  The shirt was handpicked by the photographer from a basement vintage shop– It was sharp with bright and popping contrasts and seemed so unique. I still have it, and it’s one of my favorite shirts, though the colorful embroidery thread has seen better days.

Anyways, I thought it was neat that Jim Cuddy and I both enjoy a nice shirt and a well written song and I thought I’d share. Thanks for stopping by!  Jay Stevens

A throw-back for our first release of 2012– Shoestring’s Seven Year’s Split

We have just compiled a limited edition split CD of the first two albums Shoestring had published in 2005.  Shoestring Studios humbly took shape in 2005 with borrowed gear and floorspace to independently produce and distribute the works of Toronto based folk-ramblers J Stevens and AJ mAJik Fletcher. With a budget made from busking change we published two debut albums- Shadow Puppets by The Falling Trees and Folk I Don’t Know by J Stevens- in a very no frills manner of CDr’s and hand-drawn, paper covers.

Seven years on, We’re happy to be re-releasing these gems as a limited split to celebrate
the continued efforts and achievements of  Shoestring and our artists.

Folk I Don’t Know – Free download of Jay Stevens’ debut LP from 2005

“…I was here to make a record, I was here to take a shot,”  a reflective lyric, in the song Back to the Cows, of the unlikely odds of the album Folk I Don’t Know ever materializing after the songs had been reared in sober times on a quiet farm.

J Stevens’ debut effort was recorded on borrowed equipment in shared spaces and humbly published on CD-rs with hand-drawn covers in 2005.  An 11 track acoustic folk collection of originals, Folk I Don’t Know has a certain warmth from crackles of the four-track tape, and youthful experimentation of mixing and mastering.

A limited re-release of Folk I Don’t Know is found on our first CD of 2012: Shoestring’s Seven Year’s Split, sharing plastic with The Falling Trees’ Shadow Puppets, also from 2005.  The CD features selections from both albums, edited for time– now Folk I Don’t Know is available digitally in its entirety– for free.
